Hello Matey…
You may have heard of the Old Vic’s 24-hr plays… plays written and performed in 24hrs? Big deal.
We at The Matey Institute would like to introduce you to our new show, The One Hour Plays! With copious help from the audience, our ten-minute plays are conceived, devised, costumed, scripted, rehearsed, and staged in only one hour. It sounds impossible, but it isn’t. It sounds insane, and to be fair it probably is. It sounds incredible, and it most definitely is!
This is crazy, zany fun. A master-class in how to put on a production. And an exercise in frenetic creativity under unbelievable pressure.
The Matey Institute is a radical breakaway alternative to the Women’s Institute, which we think is limited by its lack of cross-gender input. Our group is similar in that we have a leaning towards arts and crafts, and we love jam. But we think our workshops are richer for their gender integration and embracing of all ages! We have been running workshops for over a year now and have garnered a cult following in North London, where we have residency in an Islington pub. We have run classes as varied as willow basket weaving, knitting, bike maintenance, origami, wine tasting and kung fu to name but a few – and all of our workshops are led by members of the group, who we invite to share their particular skills. We have not had to hire any teachers as each time a new person joins us, our skill-base increases.
Our show will be an embodiment of the Matey Institute ethos – to share what we know (about theatre, in this instance) and invite others (the audience) to share what they can in return (ideas, inspiration and helping out with props/costume making).
So, come in and have a look around our little makeshift online HQ. Things are still under construction so please do bear (bare?) with us while we throw together additional content. Any comments, queries and general tidbits are more than welcome – just stop by at the comments page & let rip!
So long for now….
